DMR vs Snipers

DMR (designated marksman rifle) vs Sniper Rifles

Before going into DMR and Snipers there are basics of combat which a person has to understand.

Most countries today use automatic rifles as standard issue rifles for infantry. These rifles are either chambered in 5.56 or 7.62 with varying calibers.

The thing with rifles is that these have been optimised by years of study of modern wars and these have been optimised for weight and range so as to be as light as possible while also being able to be effective upto a normal requirement of gunfights which today mostly happen at maximum 300-350m. The bullets can travel farther but these rifles are not very accurate at longer ranges and hence act as area weapon and not point weapons beyond this.

Now here comes the role of DMR or Snipers.

Over the years the terms have becoming confusing as earlier what were sniping ranges are now not totally dominated by snipers and DMR to a major extent have taken their place to a degree.

DMR are designated marksman rifle which is basically a derivative of standard rifles which are designed to be very accurate at longer ranges. These are normally very similar to assault rifles but usually have a longer heavier barrel, a high powered optic and certain modifications to basic weapon done to achieve better accuracy like better barrel cuts and specialized ammunition for longer efficiency. These are effective upto 300-800m taking roles of earlier sniper rifles to a degree.

Sniper Rifles, today sniper rifles have become much more advanced compared to the previous generations. Earlier sniper roles were limited to 300-800m but today snipers have improved and with modern ammunition like .338 and technology advancement the snipers are very well able to shoot over a mile or over 1.5+ kms. Snipers can be semi automatic or bolt action and are normally heavier than DMR. To be honest sniper rifles are merely RIFLES which are used by specialised troops called SNIPERS and hence often term snipers rifles is used.
