Now developing a new 6.8X43 mm assault rifle

Ok so the media & defence community going gaga over 6.8x43 mm rifle which drdo is working on and linking it to defence ties btw India and US and how US has been working on a new round 6.8x43 which is superior to 5.56 in penetration but lighter than 7.62  and has the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

"Best of both worlds" it is a term used quite often by two kinds of people

1) who specifically know their desires and no product available fulfills their demands

2) people who have no idea of what they want but constantly are unsatisfied with their choices.

Seeing the Indian S.I Rifle saga is it not difficult to analyse which one we fall into.

The pic shows all the calibers IA now operates with rifles (5.56x45, 7.62x39 and 7.62x51)

Now after years of abandoning MCIWS ( MULTI CAL INDIGENOUS WEAPON SYSTEM) whichbis shown in pic below they want something which has a similar capability.

For those who dont know MCIWS it was a multi cal rifle which could fire multiple types of rounds just by changing barrel and some parts inside ( 5.56, 6.8x43 and 7.62x39), back then the project was abandoned saying multicaliber rifle is unrealistic requirements and we will have a standard round for all ( here we are operating 3 rounds already).

Back then India was also working on a 6.8x43 mm round and the mciws was doing well but was abandoned or shut because  the 6.8X43 ROUND WAS NOT USED BY MANY NATIONS and that IT WOULD CAUSE ISSUES IN INTEROPERABILITY.

now that US is working on same round for its rifles and MG it apparently became the next logical step somehow 🤨.

THIS REACTIVE NATURE OF OUR POLICY & THE INABILITY TO STICK TO OUR OWN IDEAS BECAUSE OTHERS DIDNT APPLY THE SAME IS ONE REASON FOR WHY WE STAY DEPENDENT

Now after procuring or selecting ak 203 and nearly a lakh sig 716 and making them issue rifles for various troops various places now army wants a 6.8 round too further complexing the inventory management and training.

I know this new rifle prototype is developed taking insas LSGP mechanism and i am sure it will be a great system ( could also be like a MCIWS chambered just in 6.8) but is it feasiable? Thats the question in my mind.

Apart from these we have already killed several of our own rifles in past just following trends of others, switching to 5.56 itself was follow the west move in past and then we are again going for 7.62x51 because it is apparently "MORE LETHAL". Today too we are switching or even looking at 6.8 because US too is doing the same or else it was earlier called "not a practical way".

I hope best comes out of it but if 6.8 mm rifle will just be another thing which will be deployed in small numbers like many other indigenous guns, it will just be another sad story.
