SPICE - PGM explained.

Contrary to what is being stated I would like to clear that SPICE is no bomb. It's a kit, a precision conversion kit generally, it uses electro optical sensors and GPS aids alongside of wings or flaps which  converts  dumb weapon bomb into guided one.

It allows conversion of various bombs into PGM in a cost effective manner.

Spice kit can be equipped to a variety of weapons including bunker busters, air blast type etc.

The CEP ( circular error probability, a term like MOA of gun) of SPICE is 3-5 m from the point of illumination ( the point which is illuminated by the pod). Spice is not a single but a family of weapons including spice 250,1000,2000. A wide variety of weapons or bombs can be equipped with spice kit and made into precision weapons.

These can carry several types of warheads including
•Conventionally impact exploding bombs
Bunker buster
•Air blast and fuel blast
•Anti-personnel bombs with shrapnel, balls or blast wave kill methods
Etc.

The guidance can is multiple ways so any suitable way can be used including TV guidance, pod designation, GPS coordinate based etc.

Now coming to a question

Why are precision guided weapons better?
PGM are better because they reduce risks of missing and collateral damage. These allow use of weapons while not risking lives which normally would be at risk if dumb unguided bombs are used. An unguided bomb can land from several hundred metres to even few KMS away and this is a problem. A pgm more or less ensures the elimination of threat while minimising damage to surrounding area or risking other people nearby

HAS INDIA SOMETHING LIKE SPICE OF ITS OWN? IF YES WHY NOT USED INSTEAD OF IMPORTED SPICE?

Yes India years ago developed SUDARSHAN CONVERSION KIT ( pic 3) which converts dumb bombs into laser guided precision munition with CEP of about 10m. The reason why it wasn't used is because Sudarshan kit cannot be used on bunker buster type weapons so those can't be used to destroy hardened targets. Also the standoff range of Sudarshan guided weapons was very less compared to SPICE and also it had some separation issues. We are also developing other PGM now.

In last decade and even today India is focusing on developing PGM, stand off weapons and long range systems. We can expect our own PGM and kits in future.
