DRDO DEVELOPED QRSAM SUCCESSFULLY TEST FIRED SECOND TIME

DRDO has developed QR-SAM in fast track mode as for a long time Indian Army as well as Indian Airforce had been asking for QR-SAM system and the deal with foreign vendors was not bearing any fruit, also to reduce the dependence on foreign systems the need for an indigenous quick reaction surface to air missile system was being felt.

Though the country has already developed its own short range AAKASH SAM (link0) which is capable of  engaging targets at range of 25-35 kms depending on version (mk1 or mk2) but Army some time ago showed displeasure stating that this system was good for fixed area defence but it was not as per mark when it came to protecting forward bases because of its bigger size & for the protection of offensive brigades of infantry while they are on the move in enemy territory, they said that for this role they required a QR-SAM which means QUICK REACTION SAM.

QR-SAM or quick reaction SAM are SAM's which are made such that they have response time of less than  3 to 4 sec and they engage their target . These SAM's are generally used in operating bases where large systems like Aakash (1 battery is like 5 vehicles including radar and launchers) are not feasible and they are either too large or expensive for use at such places like forward bases.

This indigenously developed QR-SAM is  built by applying the knowledge gained by AAKASH & ASTRA systems and this new system is based on ASTRA missile (link) system. The range of this newly developed QR-SAM is reported to  be around 25-30 kms and it is said to be capable of engaging multiple targets.

It is an all weather system which has been successfully tested  twice till today (first time on June 3rd and second time today). Before induction the new QR-SAM will have to undergo several more trials some of  which are expected in near future and seeing the pace of the project so far we can expect this system to be tested on fast track basis too so we might see its induction in about a year or two.

The new QR-SAM will provide not  just a defensive but also offensive defence capabilities to our army especially. Other than this it will also reduce our dependence on foreign weapons and will also replace the near obsolete air defence systems which have to be phased out from our armed forces in near future.
