During January 2017 Govt placed order of 1.58 lakh modern lightweight bullet proof helmets(LINK).
Till now the helmets which were in use were heavy as well as not very functional, the protection provided against projectiles was not adequate and also the impact force generated when the helmets was struck by a projectile turned out to be lethal as it was directly transferring all the force to the head of the user which caused severe trauma and which was a big reason for death of many soldiers. New helmets have additional padding for protection against trauma.
The helmets have been ordered from a Kanpur based company named MKU which has now started the deliveries of the helmets to the Indian army. After the initial order of 1.58 lakh helmets is fulfilled it is expected that there will be bigger follow up orders as army plans to equip each soldier with these lightweight helmets.
Also these helmets have provision for mounting various sights and devices like night vision, optical sights and other necessary or desired attachment, this will enable a soldier to be more effective as with old helmets the soldiers had to use hand held night-vision etc devices which were more or less a hindrance during operation as a soldier cannot effectively engage a target while he is operating a hand held device.
These helmets offer world class protection and are more ergonomical and practical. These helmets will save lives of several of our brave-hearts. Induction of these modern lightweight helmets is a small but crucial step towards modernization of Indian army.
