NUCLEAR CAPABLE NIRBHAY CRUISE MISSILE SET FOR ANOTHER TEST THIS MONTH

Nirbhay is a long range subsonic cruise missile which is capable of delivering nuclear warheads, it is developed by DRDO. Nirbhay was designed to complement the BRAHMOS (LINK) missile which has a limited range of about 300 kms. The advantage of nirbhay is that it is a low cost all weather cruise missile which is capable of striking target at range upto 1000 kms. 

The missile can not only take nuclear warheads but also conventional ones. For launch the missile is powered by a solid rocket booster which helps missile attain the required altitude and velocity after which the turbofan engine of the missile comes into action and propels the missile to the target.

The missile is subsonic with the max speed (after turbofan engine is engaged) of 0.8 to 0.9 mach and has the ability to loiter in the airspace above the target and fly around the target for sometime before it engages the target and it also has the capability to select a specific target in between a cluster of targets (usually when carrying conventional warhead).

The missile is capable of flying as low as 4 m to avoid the radar detection.


TESTING - Till now missile has had 3 tests and they were not really very successful. 2 out of 3 tests were partial or complete failures and only one test was successful.

The test which is scheduled this month is critical as DRDO claims that the faults in navigational systems which caused issues in earlier tests have now been rectified.  

If the test is successful than India will have another missile which will complement the present and even next brahmos.

but if test fails then DRDO would have to answer a lot of questions and this will surely affect the progam.
