INS Chennai is the third and the last destroyer of KOLKATA CLASS and today it was commissioned in Indian Navy. INS CHENNAI is the largest naval warship built in India and it is a kolkata class stealth destroyer.
It is the third and final ship of Project 15A or Kolkata-class guided missile destroyers the other two being INS KOLKATA & INS KOCHI which were commissioned into Indian Navy in 2014 & 2015 respectively. The ship was built at Mazagon Dock & will add more teeth to Indian Navy.
The ship is equipped with state of the art sensors and the deadliest weapons along with stealth features which makes it one of the best in world. The ship is also capable of carrying two helicopters which can be used for various roles.
The destroyer is equipped with BRAHMOS MISSILE (TO READ ABOUT BRAHMOS CLICK LINK) & BARAK 8 air defence system along with Kavach chaff decoy system and Mareech torpedo decoy system for protection from enemy torpedoes which are both developed in India.

Its undersea warfare capability includes indigenously developed anti-submarine weapons and sensors, prominently the hull-mounted sonar HUMSA-NG, heavyweight torpedo tube launchers, rocket launchers and towed array sonar capability.
This makes kolkata class destroyers a versatile platforms which can be used for SURFACE WARFARE to ASW(ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE).
INS Chennai will be placed under the operational & administrative control of the Western Naval Command. The ship will first undergo few more tests and then it will be handed to the western command.
INS Chennai is another step towards Indian Navy's dream of becoming a blue water navy.
PROJECT 15A has not just provided us with 3 world class destroyers but also we have gained experience and knowledge about development of stealth destroyers. This will help India develop better stealth destroyers at faster rate in future.
Now the PROJECT 15B or Vishakhapatnam class destroyers are under construction too with the first one expected to be commissioned by mid 2018
