TRIBUTE TO THE HEROES

India our motherland has been home of numerous brave heroes who have served out motherland whenever she has called . If i start writing a blog about each and every hero who has locked horns with enemies and  protected our nation i would probably never ever be able to because the list of brave-hearts is never-ending .There are several unsung heroes too who we don't recognize ,but in this blog i will write about few heroes who stood tall in the harshest of conditions and did superhuman things for protecting our nation. The list is not in any way comparison of one hero to another because that will not only be childish but a mistake as all of these men have done a great deal for our nation and their acts of valor cannot be compared.

1. RIFLEMAN JASWANT SINGH RAWAT - HERO OF 1962 INDO-CHINA WAR

Jaswant Singh Rawat was an Indian rifleman soldier Rifleman (RFN) Jaswant Singh, number 4039009, was serving with the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles.
He is a hero of INDO-CHINA war of 1962.
During war Indian soldiers were ordered to vacate the post of Nuranang as they were outnumbered by Chinese troops and were facing heavy causalities .

Jaswant Singh Rawat refused to vacate the post and stayed even when his battalion left and decided to fight . Jaswant Singh remained at his post at an altitude of 10,000 feet assisted by two local Monpa tribe girls named Sela and Nura.

He used his wit and set of weapons at various posts and maintained a volume of fire from all different posts .While the tribal girls supplied him with arms and munitions. The Chinese fell for his trap and thought that they are facing an entire battalion of Indian soldiers and thought that their information that Indians have vacated the post was wrong .During nights Jaswant used to tie lanterns on the neck of goats and Chinese thought that they were Indian soldiers moving from in the post.

Using these tactics Jaswant Singh Rawat successfully managed to fool the Chinese troops and held the post for full 3 days. Finally the Chinese captured the man who was supplying rations to Jaswant and he revealed to them that they were opposed by only one man and not the entire battalion. This made the Chinese furious and they attacked with full force .

Jaswant Singh Rawat and the tribal girls fought valiantly but Sela died in a grenade burst, Nura was captured while she was collecting ammunition . When Jaswant Singh Rawat realised that he was about to be captured and had nearly no ammunition left he used his last bullet to shoot himself.

The Chinese were so furious on learning that they had been fighting a single soldier all this time that they cut off Rawat’s head and carried it back to China. Rawat did not only fool the Chinese troops and held the post for 3 days but he also killed over 300 Chinese troops.

The post that Rawat held to repulse the Chinese troops has been renamed Jaswant Garh in recognition of his courage.

After the war ended , the Chinese commander, impressed by the soldier’s bravery, returned the head along with a brass bust of Jaswant Singh. The bust, created in China to honor the brave Indian soldier, is now installed at a small shrine at the battle spot. No soldier, not even a general, is allowed to move ahead, towards the Sino-Indian border, unless he pays his tribute to rifleman ‘Baba’ Jaswant Singh Rawat.

THE BRASS BUST INSTALLED IN SHRINE

Jaswant is treated as if he is alive, his boots shined and his uniform and accoutrements cared for by Army personnel posted at the shrine. He has received all his promotions in time, and has reached the rank of Honorary Captain. He even gets his yearly vacation and a jeep is sent to the railway station to drop him.
Soldiers (INDIAN AND CHINESE) believe that he still protects the border and there are numerous accounts of his sightings.

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.

2.Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav -THE CONQUERER OF TIGER HILL (KARGIL WAR )

Yogendra Singh Yadav was born on 10 May 1980 in Aurangabad Ahir village of Sikandrabad, Bulandshahr District, Uttar Pradesh. His father Karan Singh Yadav had served in the Kumaon Regiment, participating in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistan wars.

Yadav was enlisted with 18 Grenadiers, was part of the commando platoon 'Ghatak', tasked to capture three strategic bunkers on Tiger Hill in the early morning hours of 4 July 1999. The bunkers were situated at the top of a vertical, snow-covered, 16,500 foot high cliff face. Yadav, volunteering to lead the assault, climbed the cliff face and installed ropes that would allow further assaults on the feature. Halfway up, an enemy bunker opened up machine gun and rocket fire, killing the platoon commander and two others. In spite of having been hit by three bullets in his groin and shoulder, Yadav climbed the remaining 60 feet and reached the top. Though severely injured, he crawled to the first bunker and lobbed a grenade, killing four Pakistani soldiers and neutralizing enemy fire. This gave the rest of the platoon the opportunity to climb up the cliff face.

Yadav then charged the second bunker and engaged in hand-to-hand combat, killing four heavily armed Pakistani soldiers.Yadav suffered 15 bullet injuries ,two hand-grenade wounds and an arm hanging limply from tendons and skin.

The platoon subsequently succeeded in capturing Tiger Hill.

Western websites have also paid tribute to him and his actions at Tiger Hill, with articles such as 5-real-life-soldiers-who-make-rambo-look-like-pussy.

YOGENDRA SINGH YADAV

For his gallantry , he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military award .Param Vir Chakra is only given for "rarest of the rare gallantry which is beyond the call of duty and which in normal life is considered impossible to do." That's right, you actually have to break the laws of reality just to be eligible.

It was initially reported that YADAV has died  but later it was found that he survived .
